This DIY leather tray kit includes everything to get started:

• 1 × Pre-cut vegetable-tanned leather panel (natural, 1.5 mm)
• Waxed thread
• Needles
• 6 × silver rivets

Tools you may need: scissors or thread snips, pricking iron, small hammer and solid surface for setting rivets.

How to Make It

1. Punch the stitch holes

Use a pricking iron and hammer on a solid surface to punch the sashiko stitch pattern through the leather. Follow the pre-marked guide on the panel.

2. Stitch the pattern

Thread your needle with the included waxed thread and stitch the sashiko pattern using a simple running stitch or saddle stitch. Take your time — this is the decorative centrepiece of the tray.

3. Fold and assemble

Fold the sides up to form the tray shape. Use the included silver rivets to secure the corners. Set the rivets with a small hammer on a solid surface.

4. Finish and enjoy

Your tray is ready to use straight away. The natural veg-tan leather will darken and develop character over time with handling.

Tip: Apply a thin coat of leather conditioner or beeswax finish after assembly to help the tray hold its shape and develop an even patina.

Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural material. Small variations in grain, tone, and surface markings are normal and part of what makes each piece unique. The natural (Jesse) Olivenleder used in this kit is untreated, so it will respond beautifully to handling, light, and any finish you choose to apply.
