All about the ELWATS

Each year, the Dutch city of Arnhem becomes a meeting point for leatherworkers, artists, and suppliers from across the world. The event is hosted inside Rozet, a modern cultural hub that transforms into a multi-level space filled with tools, hides, and people deeply focused on their craft.

It’s not loud or overwhelming. Instead, there’s a steady energy—people learning, discussing techniques, and examining materials up close. You quickly realize this isn’t just an event you walk through. It’s one you participate in.

Built around doing, not just looking

What makes ELWATS stand out is its strong focus on hands-on learning.

Before and during the main trade show days, the building fills with workshops led by experienced leather artists from around the world. These sessions go far beyond basic introductions. You’ll find in-depth classes on carving, construction, pattern development, and finishing techniques.

It’s common to see someone spend hours perfecting a single detail—guided by a teacher who has spent decades mastering that exact skill. The pace is slower, more intentional, and focused on real improvement.

A global mix of styles and techniques

One of the most unique aspects of ELWATS is the blend of international influence.

In a single visit, you might encounter:

  • Traditional Western tooling styles
  • Fine European leather goods craftsmanship
  • Japanese precision techniques
  • Contemporary artistic approaches

That mix creates something rare: a place where different leather traditions meet and influence each other directly. It’s not just about learning one method—it’s about understanding how different parts of the world approach the same material.
